Collaborative Canadian act Flõstate recently released debut track ‘Time’ - a song that mixes hazy r&b sounds with a chilled pop vibe. We had a chat with the creative duo about how their worlds met and what their debut track is all about.

Hey Flostate, how are you?
Oh ya know, just actively trying to stay calm. Pandemic, social isolation & societal racism, it’s a lot of epiphanies on the mind. Our world needs a revolution & we also feel grateful for our lives, and feel that music is the least we can do to contribute to making the world a better place. How are you? (:

Where does the name Flostate come from?
Flostate comes from being in the moment. When the boundaries of time and conscious thoughts disappear and you become the vessel of creative spirit or the “muse”. It’s being in the state of flow.

You consist of two people, Michael Le and Avery Florence - how did your talents meet to create the band?
We met on our only overlapping day at this music school, (shoutout Harris Institute) and we just clicked. When we started collaborating it just felt very natural and unique at the same time. It’s really amazing to get to create with someone else, because the life of an artist can actually be quite solitary. We’ve had very different experiences but have always easily connected. Unifying our creation has enabled us to just multiply the different ways of our process; ways we get inspired.

Where are you based? What is it most famous for?
Toronto, Canada. Probably Drake, if you’ve heard of him.

What would you say are your key influences as a band?
Our emotional vulnerabilities, and introspection about the world. Everything has to start from a feeling, perspective shift, or experience.

So your track ‘Time’ is out now, can you tell us what it is about?
Time captures this sensual desire of losing oneself in a timeless state.Trying to capture a feeling of only ever almost touching; fragments of moments are interwoven throughout the song’s continuous momentum. We see the themes of this song as an introduction to what Flostate really means.
