The Band Explains: Cold Beaches - 'Somebody'

Sophia Nadia of psychedelic rock n roll outfit Cold Beaches talks to us about creating her self produced music video for ‘Somebody’, which sees her embrace her more manic and ruthless side in the name of women’s empowerment.

Where was the video for ‘Somebody‘ filmed?
The video was filmed in Cicero Illinois at a motel.

How does the video connect with the song?
It connects with the song because it shows paranoia: me barricading a door that a man is trying to enter. Me trying to enjoy solitude and know my value without someone trying to take it away (men).

Do you have any behind the scenes stories you can share with us?

I cant swim, so the bath scenes were extremely difficult. I kept having trouble keeping my face under water long enough for the shots we needed.

Could you tell us about the ideas/ themes/imagery used?
The theme is love- lots of red and heart shaped mirrors. There are a lot of characters I play- the soft romantic princess, the paranoid mean isolated woman, and I think that reflects how I feel when I go through the trials of relationships with people who do not treat me the way I deserve to be treated.

Is there a message the video is trying to convey?
The general plot is that i’m on the phone with someone who “doesn’t love me” somebody who “just wants to fuck me”, and I barricade the door and slowly get more paranoid as the song progresses, watching the door, watching the phone. I want women to know that they can be alone, and it’s often times better to be alone and named “the crazy bitch” than to be with “somebody” and play along with the “romantic vulnerable little girl” trope.
