In Conversation With #104 - SKAAR
Rising Norwegian alt-pop arist SKAAR has just released her debut EP ‘The Other Side of Waiting’, which sees her fusing addictive hooks with stunning vocals. The EP shows the full intent and potential of this artist- who offers a beacon of light in these dark times for music. She took a moment to talk to us about how the release came together.
Hey there, how are you? So your debut EP is out now - how does it feel?
Hellooo!! It feels soooo weird.. Been working on it for three years now, so to finally put it out feels sooo friggin amazing! Gahhhh
It is called ‘The Other Side Of Waiting’ - does that have a certain meaning?
Yes! The EP is a story from after I moved from Stord (the little island where I grew up) to Oslo. And ever since I was little I’ve been waiting and dreaming of doing music full time, and now it’s finally happening! So the other side of waiting is about situations happening in my life after I started living my dream!
This debut creates a great introduction to your music, how did you decide which songs made it onto the release?
I didn’t even have to decide, it just made sense. After writing some of the songs we started to write specifically for the EP, and I convinced everyone that the EP had to be that way!
What are the key influences and themes on the EP?
Coldplay, Banks, Bon Iver and Florence + the machine has been a big influence when writing the EP. And the themes have just been things I’ve been thinking about, situations in my life, and things happening around me in the world.
Do you have a favorite lyric on the EP? If so, which one and why?
Hmmm hard to choose! But it would have to be «now we’ve traded being close to keeping company» from “Quiet”! It just says exactly what I felt at the time in a beautiful way.
You grew up on the island of Stord, which has some stunning scenery - do you think you surroundings have influenced your music style in any way?
Yes no doubt! I like to blow up every single feeling in my songs and lyrics. On Stord, the scenery and nature is very breathtaking and dramatic. This always inspires me when I write!
Now the EP is out there - what next?
Im gonna write, A LOT! I always plan my next moves and have a lot of ideas and thoughts about what to write. I really can’t wait!
