Let us introduce you to Brighton based duo - Loda.mi - who have arrived on the scene with debut single ‘Dial Up’. Made up of French vocalist Lea Dubois and UK- born producer Elliott Turnley - their new track is beautifully minimal yet emotionally complex. They took a moment to talk to us about their music.

Hey there Loda.mi - how are you? First things first, how do we pronounce your band’s name?
Elliot: "Hey! We are doing great thanks. We are Loda.mi which is pronounced (low-da-mee). Good to clear that one up!"

Your debut single ‘Dial-up’ is out now, can you tell us what it is about?
Léa “Dial-up was inspired by the feeling of meeting someone briefly, and then having to move away from them without knowing when you will next meet. It’s about the thought of long distance, the doubts you have about letting yourself get sucked in but also the excitement and uncertainty of new beginnings. It’s about making things work and believing in the feelings you have.”

How did you both meet and what made you want to start a band together?
Léa: "We met in the summer of 2018 when I was visiting Brighton from Paris (for the 3rd time that year) and we stayed in contact for 6 months until I moved to Brighton early 2019.  During the time I remained in Paris, we exchanged projects we were both working on."

Elliot: "After hearing each other’s styles we discussed working on music together. Our musical journey started beginning of 2020 when we moved into shared accommodation. At this point I had lots of ideas and instrumentals which Lea’s vocals instantly complimented. Luckily for us we had a lot of time in the first lockdown to write, record and become confident with our sound.”

Who are your key musical influences?
Léa: “If I had to choose two key influences, my first would be Kllo. Chloe’s vocal range is fantastic and her writing resonates with me. They are a key influence musically also as they centre most of their production around the piano. Second would be Ouri. She brings the energy and catchy melodic vocal hooks!
Elliot: “I’m going to choose Hundred Waters first, I take a lot of inspiration from them sonically, especially the harmonisation of Nicole’s vocals and their choice of melodic structure. Second for me would be Mk.gee. They cover a range of genres in their discography yet have a cohesive sonic warmth that glues it all together. I take inspiration from their groove and feel too.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to you before?
"Piano based minimal electronic with a mixture of more upbeat breaks and catchy vocal hooks. A combination of electronic pop, garage and R&B elements.”

You are based in Brighton, what are your favorite things about? Where do you go on adventures?
Elliot “Pre 2020 we spent a lot of time discovering and experiencing live music in our favourite Brighton venues (Green Door, Rose Hill, Prince Albert, Patterns) and stopping off at our favourite pubs (Easy Tiger, Pond, Earth & Stars, Hop Poles)."
Léa "In 2020 we have been cycling along the coastlines, walking in the downs and supporting our favourite local independent shops and record stores (Family Store, Resident, Rare Kind). This year I’ve been illustrating a lot and always love taking a trip to Dowse. I love their range of prints and home decorations."

Now the debut track is out there, what next for Loda.mi?
Elliot “We are currently finishing off a video to accompany Dial-up. Aside from this we areworking on releasing some live performance videos from our flat and also a new radio show.
Léa "Finally more music! A follow up single and hopefully an EP before the end of 2021.”
