Inspired #193 - LOKOY

Lasse edit by Mohamud Abdirashid.jpg

Norwegian artist, producer and creative wizard Lokoy has just released his full length debut album ‘badminton’ via Propeller Recordings. A full blown explosion of no-rules pop, pushing the genre into a futuristic direction while also bringing to the table a number of new exciting Norwegian talent (Nils Bech, Safario, Moyka, Emilie Østebø, VARPU and Sofus). He took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind his music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations?
Hmmmm. I don’t have a set of artists I always listen to. I (like everyone else) find new musical inspirations all the time. Suddenly I hear a song that really hits me, and then I obsess over that/those song(s) rather than the artist. I think my current top three inspiring songs are: “moment” by lildeath, “Long Road Home” by Oneohtrix Point Never and “Make It Forever” by George Clanton. All of these songs are super inspiring to me. All of them have a melancholic sentiment and extremely fresh productions.

Is there a certain film that inspires you?
I watched Dogtooth a couple of weeks ago. That inspired a lot of the scenes for my next music video for the song “relay”.

What city do you find the most inspiring?
I don’t think there is a city I find more inspiring than any other. I get inspired when I’m in new places and meet new people. So I love to travel somewhere I haven’t been before to work.

Who is the most inspiring person to you?
I feel like a basic bitch for saying this, but it might be Frank Ocean.

What were your inspirations when writing your new album?
Many of these songs were written in places I hadn’t been before, with people I had just met. And I’m always inspired by the music I’m currently listening to. So ye, all the above inspired the record.

How would you like to inspire people?
I would like to inspire people to create.
