Tuesday night saw the timeless musings of Blackaby fill Stoke Newington’s The Waiting Room, rampant with warmth, wit and wondrous displays of talent.

Following the success of the 2020’s debut EP ‘What’s on the TV?’ alongside this year’s sophomore collection ‘Everything’s Delicious’ Blackaby’s stop in the capital was anticipated to be a super fun one; with support coming from Snailbeach and a last-minute addition to the lineup, Oscar Browne.

Notably, The Waiting Room isn't famous for its size, more so its humble charm and traditional presentation, and so we were in for a cosy and rather personal evening, with the rightfully generous turnout that showed (safe from the rain though, at least!). Springing straight into action with a nimble rendition of 'Breakfast At Tiffany's', the room filled with mutual bliss and serenity. Sure, it's not the most typical way to open a set; however, it went down a treat, uniting the audience in only a matter of seconds. Throughout the evening, the overall mood was incredibly wholesome and grounding upon reflection. The band's relationships on stage seemed to put everyone at ease, creating a very moving environment and safe space, which, even in your more intimate venues, is still quite a rare thing to achieve. Seeing how comfortable the band were with each other resonated throughout the room, and a ubiquitous sense of belonging was reflected.

Brazen with witty sentiments and straightforward inflections, the setlist felt like something of a familiar conversation, an evening spent ruminating with a good pal. Personal highlights included ‘ Warm and Sweet’, new songs ‘Perfect Illusions’ and the sublimely intimate ‘I Wanted’ and of course the night’s closers and everybody’s favourites 'Semolina’ and ‘What’s on the TV?’. Words can’t really express the feeling that circulated the room - you kind of just had to be there! You’re missing out if you're not on the Blackaby hype; It’s the kind of music I would implore anyone to listen to, and I believe there's a sense of comfort to be had for everyone.

The thought of what’s to come from Blackaby is truly exciting! With the prospect of that debut album on the horizon, I really do hope to see big things in the future.
