Album Review: Magnetic Spacemen - 'Papoya Poya'

For those that dig gritty garage rock and surf-influenced post-punk, Magnetic Spacemen are just the band for you! The Dutch emerging outfit have just released their second album, ‘Papoya Poya’.

The ten-track counting piece of alternative rock is inspired by many different genres that all come together in catchy songs and a load of mad sounds. The band teased us with previously released singles ‘Globetrotter’ and ‘PRA’, which are both of the fast paced, high energy kind which is exactly what we were hoping they would be.

The band sees their new record ‘Papoya Poya’ as the start of a new chapter, a garage-induced one! The album was recorded in an empty club in The Hague at the start of the first lockdown in March 2020, all recorded on analog tape. An uncertain future and the fear that came with it gave the record its extra edge, with tracks such as ‘Early Pecan’ and ‘Mon€y’ sounding like the ups and downs we have undoubtedly all experienced.

When it comes to their sound, Magnetic Spacemen have already outgrown the title of ‘emerging band’, and the same goes for their stage performance. We were lucky enough to catch the band live when they supported VANT in Newcastle, and were pleasantly surprised by their organised yet chaotic sound. Fans of Oh Sees, FIDLAR and Meatbodies; it’s time to get on the Magnetic Spacemen train!
