Inspired #326 - Scott Helman

Canadian pop artist Scott Helman explores the idea of gender-expression in the video for latest single ‘Pretty’. Directed by longtime collaborator Ben Knechtel, the accompanying video puts Helman on full display in a pulsating solo performance – experimenting with dazzling makeup and flowing outfits – as he explores and searches for what it takes to feel confident. He took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind his music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
Changes every day, but today it’s Prince, Ruston Kelly and Paul Simon. Because they are all brave.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. So many of the effects in this movie are not post production, which has inspired so many of the choices I’ve made for my music videos. Also the story is beautiful.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Today, Los Angles. So much hustle, so many talented people.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
My friend Simon. She has, against odds, built a beautiful, meaningful, compassionate life, and she writes my favourite songs.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I wanted to have fun. I wanted to laugh. I wanted to dance. Prince helped too :)

How would you like to inspire people?
By inspiring myself that I may act as a mirror.
