In Conversation With #163 - Odd Morris
Dublin’s Odd Morris has just released their high anticipated debut EP - ‘Cityscape The Ballet’. This collection of five tracks explores the anxieties of both an observational and introspective nature, examining our place & lives within these skyscrapers and convenience stores. They took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.
Hey there Odd Morris, how are you? So your debut EP is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Feels great to finally release a body of work!
It is titled ‘Cityscape The Ballet’ - does that have a certain meaning behind it?
Its from a lyric on the EP. It's kind of a play on the words 'escape the ballet', meaning escape the performance of the everyday.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
It was recorded by Mick Heffernan in Black Mountain Studios in Ireland. I think we surprise ourselves with how much we change parts of the songs on the day. You tend to hear the songs differently in the control room, then there's the added thought of 'this is it'. The outro guitar riff for Rose Like Smoke was written on the day, as was the duel guitar outro in You Tried. There's actually too many to note, but yea even parts of the second verse of 'Cityscape the Ballet' were rewritten.
What are the key themes and influences on the EP?
I think ultimately it's reflecting on personal moments of the last two years. I find it easier to write on experience than to create a story. There's feelings of heartbreak for sure, and general frustration of maybe not knowing how to open up.
Do you have a favourite lyric on the EP? If so, which one and why?
I enjoy the fact the EP opens with a question 'what’s life but the promise of love?'. I think it sets the tone for what's to come.
Now the EP is out there - what next for you?
Play as many shows as humanly possible.
