Remember Sports - 'Materialistic'

Emotion is something that can be often difficult to genuinely convey in music, but for Philadelphia’s Remember Sports this isn’t the case. Their new single ‘Materialistic’ is a honest and raw account of lead singer Carmen Perry’s attachment to what she deemed materialistic items, and the suppression of her thoughts.

"It's about the feedback loop of me caring about my possessions because they hold special memories, and alternately thinking I'm a bad person for caring about a mostly meaningless pile of junk," Carmen explains.

Through the slight raspiness of her vocals, combined with the richness of the guitars and soft percussion, the gentle beginning of the song soon progresses into something more intense. As it builds up through the addition of crashing cymbals and a cathartic guitar solo, before returning to a quiet melodic riff that plays the song out, ‘Materialistic’ takes us on a nonlinear journey of processing emotion.

With a 90s rock influence to it, the ballad lays the foundations for their upcoming record ‘Like a Stone’, that’s due to be released on April 23rd.

“We’ve grown up together and grown to trust each other,” says Carmen. In recording, Jack felt drawn to music that’s “communal and loud and cathartic, but also kinda confidential and private.’’

Whilst the album will be delving into the band’s insecurity and doubt, there’s an optimistic light shone upon them; As they tackle their troubles head on, they not only emit a sense of vulnerability to their listeners, but to each other in the process.
