Cathy Jain – 'cool kid'
Emerging lo-fi singer-songwriter Cathy Jain explores issues of authenticity on immersive new single ‘cool kid’.
Laidback and mellow, ‘cool kid’ is carried by slow-moving beats and cathy’s gentle vocals. It’s a song that invites you to dream, drift lazily on its smooth melody lines, until the chorus comes in with an ever so subtle groove and lifts you into a slow dance. Lyrically, however, ‘cool kid’ is not as carefree as it appears. “This song is about how so much of our time is spent trying to project images of ourselves to others, and how we define other people by projecting our own emotions on to them,” Cathy explains. “I think lots of people, especially those my age, will relate to the theme of fakeness vs authenticity and how people present themselves to each other.”
Following previous singles ‘i see us in heaven’, ‘artificial’ and ‘green screen’, ‘cool kid’ sees cathy jain hone in on her enviable ability to craft gorgeously dreamy soundscapes. If you’re a fan of atmospheric world building and fluid soundscapes, cathy jain is an artist you should most definitely keep an eye on.
