London based artist Tana has just released her silky new track ‘Make It Up’ - a dark r&b track that is filled to the bring with commercial beats and melodies. She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations?
My top three musical inspirations are Miley Cyrus, The Weeknd, and Halsey. I love Miley Cyrus because she's constantly reinventing herself, and holds so much power and grit in her voice. The Weeknd because of his songwriting skills and his ear for compelling and captivating soundscapes. And Halsey because she's completely shifted what it means to be a woman in music, using her voice to amplify issues such as misogyny, rape, and other important topics.

Is there a certain film that inspires you?
I watch a lot of films, but one film that really inspires me is ‘Forrest Gump’. It teaches me to never give up, and to always be grateful and enjoy the simple things in life.

What city do you find the most inspiring?
I still have a lot of places that I desperately want to visit, but so far Berlin has inspired me the most. It was the first place I travelled to alone, and this trip acted like a self discovery experience in itself. I met a lot of new and really interesting people, and the city itself doesn't look like anything else. I like the way things go there, for example: some parts of the city look really derelict and broken, and some parts look pin and proper. It’s a beautiful juxtaposition in itself, and that is what makes it Berlin.

Who is the most inspiring person to you?
I’ve always been surrounded by really amazing people, but the most important person is my mum. She doesn’t know how truly inspiring she is. She’s taught me to fight, and to always be grateful and kind. She gives me the best advice, supports and celebrates me, and is always there when I need a shoulder to cry on.

What were your inspirations when writing your new single?
‘Make It Up’ is a song about vices. I began writing the song in 2019, but only got around to finishing it this year. The song explores getting lost in desires and enjoying them, whilst attempting to correct and maintain a relationship. Ultimately, what I am trying to say is that people mess up and it's ok to because life is a learning experience. However, in the long run, the desire should be to develop and grow as a person.

How would you like to inspire people?
I hope to inspire people through my musical and personal journey. I always try to be 100% my authentic self and try to communicate this through the music that I put out, my image, and songwriting. I like to address topics that are of importance to me, and challenge them, such as sexuality, relationships, and the LGBTQ+ community. I find it super inspiring when someone, anyone can openly speak about their core values, and what matters to them the most. Your reputation and character will always inspire people more than anything, and I think the best way to call out the best in others, is to expect the best from yourself.
