Inspired 211 - Yndling
Hypnotic Norwegian artist Yndling pulls us into her own dream pop world with new single ‘Childish Fear’ - she took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.
Who are your top three musical inspirations?
I’d say my top three musical inspirations, at least for right now, are Beach House, Angel Olsen and Julia Jacklin. Beach House was my first real introduction to dream pop, and their albums ‘Teen Dream’ and ‘Bloom’ was literally all I listened to for a whole summer. I also love the more shoegaze-y direction they have taken things with their last album, and it’s just my go-to when I want to submerge myself in music alone for a bit.
Angel Olsen is also an all time favourite, and the ‘All Mirrors’ album is just so beautiful and a really intense listen. She was actually also the last artist I saw live before the pandemic; She came to Oslo last February, and it was a really mesmerising experience.
As for Julia Jacklin, she is just such an amazing storyteller. She’s got a sophisticated simplicity with her songwriting, and writes with a feeling of honesty that really resonates with me. Also her voice is just brilliant.
Is there a certain film that inspires you?
Honestly, I’d love to be super artsy and say some French cult film from the 80s or something, but I can only sit still for about 30 minutes watching a film by myself and that really limits things
I did just rewatch ‘The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ though, and that is a film that really makes me appreciate how different we treat our memories and how love isn’t a permanent state of happiness and enthusiasm. It’s a go-to for me when I’m in a bit of a melancholic mood. It’s either that or «Legally Blonde» and honestly I wish I was cooler but that is just the reality of things.
What city do you find the most inspiring?
I still have a lot of places that I’d love to see, but in general I really like cities with older architecture over more modern ones. I live in Oslo, which is by the sea and in relative close proximity to nature whilst still having a lot to offer of culture and city life, and I have to say that mix is a perfect one for me, at least for now.
Who is the most inspiring person to you?
I’m lucky enough to have a lot of people in my life that inspire me in different ways, but my sister is definitely one to mention. She’s got a way of going after what she wants in an unapologetic sort of way and she is really good at just about everything she sets her mind to. I find that determinedness really inspiring.
What were your inspirations when writing your new single?
’Childish Fear’ is about that stage in a relationship when there isn’t really that much new and exciting to discover about each other. It’s about the fear of not being enough once the shimmering glow of first expression fades. It’s an intimate and personal track for me, and I wanted to communicate that with the production as well as the lyrics, with an increasing intensity and fullness of the sound as the track unfolds.
How would you like to inspire people?
Music has always been a way for me to slow down, and remember to enjoy little moments in life as they happen. I can be quite restless and feel the need to be several places as once, kind of like I’m always lagging behind, and I tend to always look forward to something and forget to enjoy the moments I am actually in at the time. Music really helps me to be present and to calm down, and it would be so cool if my music could do the same for someone else.
