Introducing #123 - Low Girl
Alt-pop newcomer Low Girl has just provided us with a taster of her debut EP with title track ‘Big Now’ - which is about climate change and how powerless it can make you feel. She took a moment to explain this further to us.
Hey there Low Girl, so you just released your track ‘Big Now’ - can you tell us what it is about?
Hello! So this song was definitely a mix of themes, with the only constant being the sense of anger and frustration. I wanted to talk about climate change and how powerless it makes me feel. There's also a nod to violence against women, specifically how it feels like sometimes you're jumping through metaphorical hoops just to get someone to empathise with the victim.
It is a teaser of your debut EP - can you tell us when we can get to hear that?
The Big Now EP gets a full release by the end of April! It's been so hard sitting on it for almost a year now. I'm so impatient, but really excited that people are finally going to hear what we've been working on.
You started writing music at the age of twelve, what were those tracks like?
They sure were...something! I'd say those tracks were largely me getting to grips with classic songwriting structures, emulating what I'd heard in the early Beatles albums. As I got older I began to play around a bit more and prioritise the emotion behind the track.
Where are you from? What is your favorite thing about living there? Where do you go for adventures?
I'm from good old Hemel Hempstead. My favourite thing is probably the familiarity of it all, and the fact that my friends still live nearby. I'd say I go to the magic roundabout for adventures, if you've ever been on it you'll know it's a wild way to spend your time.
What are your key musical influences?
It really varies from week to week but I'm forever inspired by Sufjan Stevens, King Princess, Frank Ocean and Clairo. At the moment I'm obsessed with Perfume Genius and Weyes Blood!
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to you before? "
It varies between really melancholic ballads and alt pop upbeat tracks - so if that's your thing, come aboard!
