Introducing #133 - SUPERNAL
Let us introduce you to SUPERNAL - an alt-pop band coming out of Liverpool, who have just released they catchy debut track ‘do you miss me too?’. Ticking boxes from the likes of Fickle Friends, Hayley Williams and Lauv, the band took a moment to talk to us about their music.
Hey there SUPERNAL, how are you? So, your debut track is out now - how does it feel to have it out there finally in the world?
Hey hey! We’re doing brill… lockdown is lifting, the sun is out, and we’ve released our first track… so no complaints whatsoever! We are hyped that “do u miss me too?” is finally out, it’s been a long time coming and an 8-month project, so for people to finally hear and vibe to something that we have worked so hard on means a lot :)
It is titled ‘do you miss me too?’ - can you tell us what it is about?
So, the concept of the song is fairly straightforward, this year has been crap and there have been a lot of “missing people” going on. Relationships have been hit hard and texting/long distance relationships suck… the song is about the back and forward reluctancy of being the first one to text, and both missing each other but being too stubborn to admit it…
Where was the track recorded? Any behind the scenes?
We all have little home studio set ups whilst COVID is still ongoing, we’ve done a few tracks with this process, it's enjoyable but it’s not quite like being in the studio together… It consists of many FaceTime calls, and bouncing projects off to one another, so it’s great when it all falls into place!
So what brought you all together to start SUPERNAL?
It’s actually an old-fashioned story, we all met in church! Joey and Sol are brothers so have always grown-up playing music together, and we met Lucy and Darren in church. The church we go to is very future forward, so we’ve played music together there for several years, it’s only been recently we’ve decided to make the jump into starting something secular!
You are based in Liverpool - what do you love about the city? Where do you go for adventures?
It’s always bustling!! Something is always happening in Liverpool it feels like the city is alive (obviously out of lockdown haha). But to be honest even in lockdown and going for walks and other bits, it’s a beautiful city and has so many parks and beaches especially to just get lost in an adventure or find inspiration and things like that.
What are your key influences as a band?
Quite a few different bits of inspiration in our songs but I’d say as a band we take a lot of inspiration from a band called glades who also formed themselves from playing together in church. Musical influences would have to LANY, Valley, and elements of artists such as Bieber and Eilish!
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to you before?
Feel good and catchy. It’ll have your head bobbing whether you like it or not haha. We do love using synths and creating catchy melodies. There’s always a surprise or two somewhere in the song or something different and if you really listen from chorus to chorus we love our ear candy, they’re never the exact same - we love differentiating them in some way.
Now the debut track is out there - what next for you?
Like we said before, we’ve already recorded and mixed two more tracks with a few more written, that’s why lockdown has been a positive for us in a weird way, as we’ve been able to get a lot of stuff done! We want to test the waters with each of our releases, they’ll all be slightly different, but we want to show everyone what we can do right from the off, so strap yourselves in! :)
