Introducing #141 - Mila Smith
Let us introduce you to sixteen year old South Africa native Mila Smith - who has just released her debut single ‘Liars and Fakes’ - a diary-style bop fillsd with soulful pop. She took a moment to talk to us about her music.
Hey the Mila, how are you? So your debut track is out now, how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
It feels really great and exciting - it was a long time in the making and I’m so happy and grateful to be able to share it with the world .
It is called ‘Liars and Fakes’ - can you tell us what it is about?
Liars and Fakes is a song written about a person who I felt only used me for superficial gain as opposed to chasing a real, genuine friendship with me.
It has a sort of diary-style lyrical flow, is that how you write your songs?
My songs are written based on my own personal experiences, emotions or simply putting myself in somebody else’s shoes and writing from their perspective. First off, I get a melody in my head, then I establish the chords (by ear) on the piano and then from there, the words come.
Music has been part of your life since a young age, what are your earliest memories of this?
My earliest memories include performing Madonna’s greatest hits on my toy microphone for my family. I also have strong recollections of being very little and singing in my grandparents’ garden. I would sing all about my day, my feelings, or just mundane things that my 4 year old self would put into a song.
Where are you from? What are your favorite things to do there?
I’m from Cape Town, South Africa. I love hanging out with my best friends, eating out, shopping and reading.
What or who are your key musical influences?
I listen to alot of different kinds of music. I always say that I love all music...except for the music I don’t like. I love Taylor Swift’s music and storytelling in her writing, I’m a fan of Adele, Dua Lipa and Beyonce. Also Lana Del Rey, Sam Smith, The Weekend and The Neighbourhood.
How would you describe your music to someone who has never listened to you before?
I’d say its pop with soul
Now your debut track is out there, what next for you?
I’m looking forward to the world opening up again and performing my music live. It’s likely that a remix of Liars and Fakes will be released and then another single - eventually an EP. Watch the space!
