Inspired #247 - Alex Luke
We caught up with Alex Luke to find out what inspires both him, and his new single Hideaway.
Who are your top three musical inspirations?
My top three musical inspirations would have to be, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix and Nina Simone. All artists who have influenced me over different parts of my life.
Is there a certain film that inspires you?
The documentary film Marley. It's about the life of Bob Marley, from his childhood to making Reggae known around the world. You can't get much more inspiring than that! I’ve always loved his music and his positive message.
What city do you find the most inspiring?
New York! I’ve always wanted to live there. You see it so much in films growing up and it’s just so symbolic. I still have the dream of living there for a year.
Who is the most inspiring person to you?
My big brother, he passed away when he was 21. He was the strongest person I’ve ever known. I looked up to him a lot. He was going to be a film director and writer. We were both really creative and he always encouraged me when I first started putting music videos out on YouTube. He’d film the videos and edit them.
What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I had just started seeing someone and my previous relationship didn’t end on good terms so I had all these exciting emotions mixed with some bad experiences. That’s where the foundation of the track came from. I’d also been listening to a lot more Pop music and I wanted to incorporate some of those elements into my production process. I think ‘Hideaway’ is a great portrayal of my musical inspirations, mixing Soul, Pop and Blues.
How would you like to inspire people?
To be themselves. I think in the social media culture we live in, people can portray themselves to the world however they want to and create a persona that may not be true to themselves. Sometimes that can be damaging to themselves and to others who might think that people should look or act a certain way and live a life without struggles.
