Soda Blonde’s ‘In the Heat Of The Night’ shows the alt-pop band in a good place ahead of their debut album.

The track’s strong electro vibe is a prime example of what to expect from their full-length LP ‘Small Talk’ in July. Self-produced and recorded at White Cottage, Killiney Beach, the track is an exploration of life and relationships in your 20s. It pays tribute to the musical past, sounding like a lost ‘80s radio rock hit, while embracing their previous life as Little Green Cars.

When front woman Faye O’Rourke opens the first verse singing “I’ll be the north and you be south”, it’s a guiding direction through Soda Blonde’s world.

What follows is Adam O’Regan’s synth-driven instrumentals, powered with the adrenaline of twenty-somethings. Dylan Lynch’s percussion and Donagh Seaver-O’Leary’s bass also help craft a glorious bed for Faye’s powerhouse vocals.

The chorus is a radio-ready melody, akin to Chrissie Hynde or Fleetwood Mac. It comes back to the song’s central theme, with the lyric: “It’s been a long time coming so don’t act surprised / the things we say in the heat of the night”.

Soda Blonde does justice to a common theme, and the vulnerabilities of growing older are not dwelled upon with too much negativity.

It’s aching for a live setting too – which explains their tour ambitions both virtually and in person throughout 2021.

For four friends who are a little less green now, they appear to be learning lessons from both life, and Little Green Cars to form a bigger, stronger truth. It leaves high hopes for ‘Small Talk’.
