Inspired #237 - Foxgluvv

Queer DIY pop artist Foxgluvv has just released her new single ‘1:00am’ - a shimmering late night disco pop track. She took a moment to discuss with us the inspirations behind it and her music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations?
The first three names that come to mind are definitely Lady Gaga, Madonna and Charli XCX. I love their work for different reasons, but ultimately the thing that inspires me most about them is their strength and dedication to creating art and being a musician that breaks boundaries.

Is there a certain film that inspires you?
Honestly, I’m super drawn to musical theatre - so I’m a sucker for any movie musicals. One of my favourites is Rocky Horror. I adore how camp it is, and the OTT visuals alongside the absurd storyline are equally as inspiring as they are confusing - I love that.

What city do you find the most inspiring?
If you’d have asked me this before the pandemic, I probably would’ve said London because I’ve spent so much time here and it’s where Foxgluvv was ‘created’. I’ve been to and seen so many cities, but truthfully, I feel like I’m still working on my answer and I’m looking forward to being able to travel again (hopefully soon!)

Who is the most inspiring person to you?
I thought of like, twenty people to mention and ten different ways to answer this question, but ultimately I think what brings all of those people and reasonings together is not necessarily a person; but queerness. Anybody who is brave enough to be themselves wholeheartedly and let their queerness shine out unapologetically is truly inspiring to me.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
Obviously the disco classics played a huge part in the writing process of “1:00am”, but more contemporary disco explorations like ‘Confessions on a Dancefloor’ by Madonna and ‘Future Nostalgia’ by Dua Lipa were influential for me too. There are a few nods to synths / sounds used in my debut EP too - the natural evolution of the ‘Foxgluvv sound’ over the years was a huge inspiration for this track too.

How would you like to inspire people?
I would like for young queer people to listen to my work and hear their stories, experiences and feelings buried beneath the surface of my music. Too often, LGBTQ+ people are left out of the narrative in the music industry, and my biggest goal is to push through that and represent not only queer people in general, but the femme lesbian perspective too.
