Introducing #144 - VEPS

Veps by Jenny F. Lunde 4.JPG

Let us introduce you to Oslo’s next big export - VEPS, who have just released their nineties fueled track ‘Ecstasy’ - which is taken from their forthcoming EP ‘Open The Door’. They took a moment to talk to us about their music.

Hey there VEPS, how are you? So your track ‘Ecstasy’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
Hey! We're great, thanks for asking! Our new song Ecstasy is essentially about commitment issues and jealousy. It’s a story about a guy with commitment issues and a girl who wants him for herself. However, people can interpret it however they like.

The track comes with a chaotic and self-directed video - any behind the scenes stories you are happy to share with us from the experience?
Yeah, we filmed the video over a weekend in Laura's basement. We did everything ourselves, filmed, set up, and cleaned (there was alot of cleaning up to do by the end of it..). Helena even baked the cakes. We had a pretty loose plan when we first started filming, but we ended up just messing around in front of a green screen for several hours each day, in a badly lit basement in sweaty painters suits and halloween contact lenses, and somehow it turned out alright!

You are based in Oslo, who is your favorite thing about living there? Where do you go for adventures?
Oslo is a very nice city to grow up in. It's perfectly small so that everything is accessible, and you know where everything is. Once you find your people and your places it's a city you really care about. When it comes to adventuring, it's nice to just walk around town, from park to park, area to area. It's difficult to get lost and each area has its own perks and personality.

How did the band start?
Helena, June and Maja knew each other since elementary school, and met Laura when they started middle school. In middle school we were making a short film together, and it was brought up that Laura and Helena was starting a band, but didn't have drums or bass. June and Maja offered to join in (with limited experience on their designated instruments, June originally a guitarist and Maja who had never touched a drum set) and Veps was born!

This track is taken from your new EP - ‘Open The Door’ - how is that coming along? When can we hear it?
Our new EP “Open the Door” is out everywhere June 11th! This (alongside our newest/upcoming singles) is our first release on Kanine Records. We’re very excited to share with the world some of the songs we have written over the past three years of us playing together. This EP means alot to us.

What are your key influences when it comes to your music?
We never know what to answer to this question, because we don’t really have any one collective answer. We are four girls with four slightly different music tastes and backgrounds, and we each bring elements from what we like into our songs! We take inspiration from everything we experience in life, and whatever elements we hear in music that we like. Our music is very much our way of expressing our emotions and thoughts about the world.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Its difficult to percieve your own music, but we would say we make homemade indie-pop-rock with 90s elements, or something along the lines of that. :)
