Introducing #169 - chrchie
Let us introducing you to chrchie, a Toronto raised but LA-based singer-songwriter chrchie - who has just released her debut track ‘in these moments’, an indie acoustic track inspired by late-lonely nights and poetry. She took a moment to talk to us about her music.
So your debut track ‘in these moments’ is out now - can you tell us what the track is about?
A big inspiration for the song was a Sylvia Plath quote that talks about the words in your mind rusting from being left in there for so long.
The track is definitely happier sounding and mellow but i think the lyrics are much darker. they're about overthinking, of being scared of your own thoughts and what other people will think of them. I guess I liked that juxtaposition because I try to be cheerful and happy most of the time. even if you're happy on the outside, it doesn't erase the self-hating thoughts inside.
I have serious imposter syndrome, i only recently started writing music and learning guitar in the past two years because I was scared to do something that wasn't my day job. so maybe that's part of it too...
Where are you based? What are your favorite things to do there?
I'm from Canada but was living in Seattle to work in big tech. when the pandemic hit, I decided to move to LA to live with some livestreamer friends (boxbox, iitztimmy, masayoshi, and seanic) and to work remotely. So far the only thing I’ve experienced in LA is good takeout… waiting for things to open back up! oh, and the sun! way different from the rainy Pacific northwest and Toronto snow.
Also, being in LA gave me the chance to work with some cool producers!
What is in your headphones at the moment?
it changes so much depending on my mood, I can go from Carly Rae Jepsen to Phoebe Bridgers in the same hour!! recently I’ve been listening to Lizzy Mcalpine’s album give me a minute and Olivia Rodrigo's sour. I love sad music but I hate how it makes me sad. What a struggle.
What are your key influences when it comes to your music?
Mree, Phoebe Bridgers, Bon Iver, dodie, Kina Grannis are some great ones. my friends- matu and juliana chahayed. some of the comfy korean artists like taeyeon, IU.
How would describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Oh gosh, I don't know!! i guess it’s comfy and heartfelt. I want to write honest lyrics. I want to explain what i’m feeling and not get too caught up in “lyricism” or caring too much about what other people think. it’s super hard though.
