Introducing #156 - Olivia O.
Let us introduce you to Olivia O. - one half of buzzy Atlanta duo Lowertown, she is releasing her debut EP ‘Great Big Nothing’ via Dirty Hit later this month on the 10th June. She took a moment to talk to us about her music.
Hey there Olivia, how are you?
Hey! I’m doing well! Really excited for all the live music that’s coming back right now. :)
So your new track ‘All I Want’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
I wrote “All I Want” while I was living on my own for the first time. I had moved to London for a few months to record my band’s next project. I found the experience to be extremely exciting but simultaneously overwhelming and isolating because the entire time we were there I was either in quarantine or lockdown all during a bitter cold winter. I was grappling with a lot of the newfound responsibility that comes after graduating highschool and moving away from home.
You are part of the Dirty Hit family - can you tell us how that partnership came about?
My friend showed Jamie (the head of DH) our music and he was a big fan. We ended up talking for a long time over text and dm and eventually sent him all the music we’d been working on for our upcoming project. We ended up really clicking with the DH team and signed right before graduating high school.
This is the taster of your new EP ‘Great Big Nothing’, how is that coming along? When can we get to hear that?
It’s coming out June 10th!! I’m really excited for this project :-) It was a really fun time putting it together and figuring out all the production and instrumentation as I went along.
What are the key themes on the EP?
Responsibility, Isolation, Adulthood, and the increasing complexity of relationships as one grows older.
What influences you as an artist?
Experiences in my life and as well as other media I’ve consumed such as movies, books, and poetry. Music has been one of my biggest influences this year. Due to the excessive time from quarantine, I have explored a lot of new genres and artists that have greatly inspired my creative direction and writing process for these coming projects.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Raw, emotive and lo-fi. Intimate and, at times, experimental.
