Kendrick Ryan - beauty mark queen
LA-based songwriter Kendrick Ryan shares lulling lofi folk-pop on sage new single, ‘beauty mark queen’.
Kendrick Ryan steps away from the stylish soulful rnb sound of her previous single, ‘I Love You’ to tap into a rawer sound on new single ‘beauty mark queen’. Self-produced, the single uses saturated guitar sounds and samples of tambourines, kick drums and floaty layered vocals to create a looped, and hypnotic sound that bobs with a gentle buoyancy.
Ryan’s beautiful vocal glides lightly across relaxed melodies. But ‘beauty mark queen’ also shares sweet warnings within lyrics such as ‘play with lightning and you’re gonna get struck’.
‘I wrote this song during a creative drought,’ Ryan explains. ‘I wanted to write a song about someone I didn't know, so I decided to write a poem about a woman I had imagined in my head. As it turned out, I ended up relating to this woman a lot and felt like she was a part of my identity.’
When writing ‘beauty mark queen’ , Ryan imaged the song being listened to in the desert on a road trip, or in a campfire circle. It’s a scorching and slightly hallucinogenic soundtrack to transformational thinking.
