Inspired #277 - Jasmine Thompson
You may recognize Jasmine Thompson from her massive collaboration with Zedd last year, but the vocalist is back with her new track ‘already there’ - which was produced by Grammy and BRIT-winning team TMS (Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran and Little Mix). She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.
Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
When I was growing up, I was obsessed with whatever my brother listened to. He introduced me to so many artists like Regina Spektor and Florence + the Machine. I fell in love with both of them because of how touching their lyrics were. Very magical humans. I feel like my mum listened to so much Eva Cassidy that she just sunk into my bones. Her songs and her voice are just heavenly.
Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I feel like it's a very basic choice, but I will always be in love with Harry Potter. I think it's really nice how a movie can affect so many people's lives, like so many people can bond over a shared love for a beautiful story.
What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
I have to say London. I know there are so many incredible cities everywhere, each with their own energy. But for me, London has something that I haven't found anywhere else yet. I think that's to do with having all my best memories with my friends here. It makes me feel really safe... but I'm always up for new places.
Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
Florence Welch has been someone I've loved musically ever since forever really. On a personal level as well, her sobriety really connected with me. My dad struggled with alcohol addiction, and it just was another level of feeling like I could connect with her.
What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I took some time off from music, and worked in a restaurant in Soho. It was so much fun, and it was a great place to make new friends and connections. So, ‘already there’ is about a couple meeting each other and how their relationship grows into something really special after the off chance that they were in the same place at the same time.
How would you like to inspire people?
I'd like to inspire someone to be creative, because other artists have really helped me to keep going and believe in myself. I hope people can find something they relate to in my music. Maybe it'll bring people up, or give them a little hand to hold during a rough time.
