Introducing #173 - Agi
Let us introduce you to Leeds-based pop newcomer Agi, who mesmerized us with her debut track ‘Crying Past Midnight’. She is back with her captivating new single ‘Lonely’ - which sees Agi explore living along during lockdown and capturing that feeling we have all experienced over the past year. She took a moment to talk to us about her music.
Hey there Agi, so your track ‘Lonely’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
Sure! I wrote this song during lockdown when I was living alone. The thought of being alone for more than 2 days used to make me feel so uncomfortable and I think this bizarre experience of being stuck inside taught me to be okay with that. In a weird way I felt more connected to people by the fact that we all felt lonely too.
Where are you based? What are your favourite things to do there?
I’m based in Leeds and my favourite thing to do is going to gigs! (As soon as we’re allowed again!) This city is filled with amazing venues and musicians. Usually almost every night something is going on. Whether that’s Belgrave (Music Hall), Headrow House or Brudenell Social Club. It's just a good place to be for some good music.
This track saw you reach out to producer Christian Fiore, what did this add to the track?
Ahh I’m such a fan of Christian’s work. I especially love “Half My Life” by Violet Skies which he produced. I knew that I wanted to work with him and Lonely just felt like a perfect fit. I sent him the demo and some references and he just elevated it to the next level. I remember the first time I listened back I was just so excited. I’m such a fan of sad bops and I feel like I brought the “sad” and he brought the “bop” to life.
What are your key influences when it comes to your music?
I’m in love with everything Jeremy Zucker does. I listen to so much new music and try to find new artists, but it’s always the songwriting that draws me in. People who can say the simplest things in the most interesting way like Julia Michaels, Lauv and Julia Wolf. I just really like their vibe!
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
I think I’m somewhere in between the guys mentioned above with my own little twist. If you want to cry to an absolute banger, I’m your gal!
