Inspired #276 - Midnight Chic
Newcastle’s Midnight Chic are a glam rock band seeking to drag rock and roll kicking and screaming back to its hedonistic heyday. We had a chat to find out what inspired both them, and their debut single ‘Lost Cause’
Who are your top three musical inspirations?
Joan Jett is definitely my biggest inspiration, the songs, the look and the sheer passion that went into her work blows me away. Not wanting to be stereotypical here, but, Freddie Mercury, the front manship and the talent is inhuman. Keith Moon has to be there for his passion and craziness, so much character and unpredictability.
What city do you find the most inspiring?
I’ve always wanted to be in Los Angeles in the states. The bands that have come and gone from that city are amazing, it's just so manic and diverse, I love it.
Who is the most inspiring person to you?
I’m a huge Spiller fan from The Struts, that man knows how to put on a show and his range is awesome, he’s a proper showman like.
What were your inspirations when writing your new single, ‘Lost Cause'?
Lost Cause was about me, I didn’t want to be like everyone else from school, I wanted to be different, a bit of a runaway. The songs about that.
What is it about the whole glam rock aesthetic that inspires you so much?
It’s just mint isn't it, I’ve been wearing my eyeliner and listening to Hanoi Rocks for years, even in school at the age of 13 I did my first gig with my makeup on. People laugh but their laughs make me want to do it more, it inspires me.
How would you like to inspire people?
I’d like to encourage people to be who they want to be, like I did. I’m confident and feel good about myself knowing that I’m not trying to do what everyone else is doing. Stick some leather pants on and line your eyes, it’s mint, trust me.
