UK songwriter Emilia Tarrant tackles the emotional strain of the Global pandemic with new single ‘Here You Are, Again’. She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind the track and her music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
My top three musical inspirations have to be Coldplay, Lennon Stella & Moby. I grew up listening to Coldplay and will probably be forever obsessed with their songwriting. Moby, who I also grew up listening to, inspired me to produce music myself. The way he uses synths and samples is super interesting to me. And finally, Lennon Stella; I just love her performing and songwriting style!

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
A classic film in my family, ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ is one that I’ve always found very inspirational. Other than just being extremely moving, it clearly gets the memo across that anything is possible. (Also, the soundtrack is awesome!)

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
One of my favourite cities is Brighton. Other than loving for it for it’s retail therapy, I am obsessed with how it is so creatively free and diverse. I was super lucky to play at The Great Escape in 2019 too, where artists and musicians from all over gather to play gigs. The vibe was really cool, and I hope to experience it again in the future.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
I always find it hard to pick one person who inspires me the most, as I admire so many people in my life for different reasons. My mum and dad for example, inspire me to always work hard and strive to do my best; my boyfriend helped me love and have confidence in myself; and my manager taught me to believe in and be proud of my music. I’ve always admired musicians like Sam Smith and Sody, who are never afraid to be themselves. I love that.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I wrote ‘Here You Are, Again’ after my mental health collapsed during the second lockdown of 2020. The realisation that mental health comes and goes as it pleases has always been something I struggle with, hence the lyric: ‘maybe I was a lil naive to believe that it would be that easy’. Whether it is mental health, a complicated relationship, or the recent ups and downs of the pandemic, I feel the song is relatable to anyone who struggles with the repetitive nature of life.

How would you like to inspire people?
I release music based on my experiences, hence why it can be super personal and emotional. All I ever want is for my lyrics to be relatable, and if in any way they help guide people through their own experiences, I will be forever be fulfilled as a songwriter.
