Inspired #299 - Leith
Toronto based singer songwriter Leith has just released her debut single ‘Love Vibes’, she took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.
Who are your three musical inspirations and why?
Carole King has always been a huge inspiration to me. She’s an amazing storyteller, there is something universal about her lyrics.
I’m completely obsessed with Phoebe Bridgers. She has such a unique way of writing and can give the most mundane thing a huge amount of feeling. Big Lorde fan, I love her melody and delivery, it’s so captivating.
Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I’m not sure about a film that inspires me but my favourite is the Princess Bride. She’s a total badass.
What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Being home in Toronto is super inspiring. I live in London now so I don’t get home as often but when I do I instantly get this safe feeling. It’s so comfortable.
Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
This is a hard question. When it comes to music, definitely my dad. His taste in music is really eclectic, he listens a lot. It’s really inspiring to be with him and hear him talk about how an artist or song resonates with him. Reminds me to keep my ears open.
What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I wrote Love Vibes in LA with Jonah Summerfield and we finished it in London. We were talking about that period before you’re a “couple” but you’re not not exclusive. It’s such a rush and you feel like you know this secret that no one else does, it’s just between you and the other person. The song was originally more electronic but as we figured out the sound it grew to be more indie and we could feel the angst we were writing about.
How would you like to inspire people?
I want people to hear my music and feel comfortable or like they can relate in some way. That for me would be incredible. I love hearing a new song and thinking “woah I soooo feel that” but never have been able to put words to it previously. If I could do that for one person that would make me really happy.
