Inspired #303 - Olivia Nelson
Latest single ‘Oblivion’ by Olivia Nelson is a bluesy neo-soul delight. Marking the first release since her previous EP ‘Back To You’ - it provides us with the perfect introduction of what she has in store for us in the coming future. She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.
Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
Whitney Houston - One of, if not, the best vocalist of all time.
Frank Ocean - He evokes a certain nostalgia that no other artist does for me
James Fauntleroy - Melody and songwriting just beautiful every time.
Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
Interstellar is my favourite film. It’s mind blowing. I love things to do with space because it puts everything in perspective for me. It’s easy to forgot how little we are in the grand scheme of things. The soundtrack, the plot, the cast - 10/10.
What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Probably London! I just love the vibe here. I love how you can meet so many different types of people on your doorstep. It’s gritty and cool but also beautiful and delicate. It’s a very accepting city too. Although, I feel like I have some sort of connection to New York. Even though I haven’t been yet I feel like I would dig it.
Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
Probably my mum. I try not to idolise celebrities/people I don’t know because you never really know what they’re like. My mum sacrificed a lot for me and she’s super hardworking. I couldn’t be doing what I’m doing without her.
What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I was going through a breakup and was going out and drinking to numb the pain instead of looking inside and dealing with my emotions. I think a lot of people do that when they’re hurting which, in turn, can end up making everything worse. It was a moment I lived through and got out of.
How would you like to inspire people?
I’d like to inspire people to be their authentic selves and follow the dreams that live inside them. We’re all on this floating rock together we need to lift each other up and make each other happy where we can. Hopefully my music can do that for someone.
