The Artist Explains - L.A Rochelle - 'IDONTEVERWANNATHINKABOUTYOUNOMORE'
London based French alt-pop artist L.A.Rochelle has just announced his forthcoming EP ‘CHAPTER 1 : DENIAL / ANGER’ - which is due out on the 4th March. To celebrate this news he has shared his emotive new single ‘IDONTEVERWANNATHINKABOUTYOUNOMORE’. He took a moment to talk to us about meaning behind the track and what his EP has in store for us.
Hey L.A. Rochelle - how are you? Your new single IDONTEVERWANNATHINKABOUTYOUNOMORE is quite the mouthful - can you tell us the meaning behind the track?
I am on the west coast of the US right now and just had the best donut of my life so I am doing great thank you!
Yes, 'IDONTEVERWANNATHINKABOUTYOUNOMORE' is an intense name. It’s a song about the duality of denial. When you tell yourself that you have to move on but you are haunted by memories you can’t erase.
There is this conflict where you know you have to get over the memory of that person but you are unable to—a duality that lies in the disconnect between the head and the heart, with one saying and wanting one thing, and the other, the opposite.
This track feels rather personal - is that the case?
It is, yes. This song wasn’t written as a romantic pop song: it’s an inner monologue capturing the war between my head and my heart as I struggle to accept the fact that one of my best friends has taken the life of my other best friend. It comes from a real deep and tragic place…
This is my way of bringing these scars to the surface to try and heal. It’s me hoping that if I can excavate this internal conflict, I would be able to hear my heart over my head. This duality is symbolised in the bilingual nature of the lyrics: my psyche sings the opening statement in English, and my subconscious is firing back in French.
Where was the track recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process?
It was written in Portugal, outdoors on my parents terrace in the peak of summer. At this time of the year the sun is too hot for you to do anything outside in the afternoon. But at 6pm when the sun starts setting and the temperature becomes acceptable, you get some very special moments. That’s in that setting that the song was written. My Friend Anatu and I, got out on the terrace and started to play some chords and out of nowhere, I started to sing that descending melody ‘I don’t ever wanna think about you no more’ and the whole song came out like that, without even thinking about it.
With this track - you have also announced your new EP. What is it called and when can we hear it?
Yes! It’s coming out on March 4th. I am really excited about it and proud to be able to share it with the world. It’s called ‘ CHAPTER 1 : DENIAL / ANGER’
What can we expect from the EP? What are the key themes on it?
It’s the first installment of a trilogy that follows the 5 stages of grief. All the songs on these EPs were written in the process of healing…I recorded this trilogy which documents, in real time, my journey through the 5 stages of grief.
From anger to denial, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance.
Now that I have finally overcome this grieving process, it feels like the right time to release the first chapter: DENIAL & ANGER.
