CloseUp // Track of the Month #002 // Katy Alex - 'Glow'
Happy new year one and all, we here at CloseUp are very excited for all that’s to come in 2022! Starting as we mean to go on, our January When The Horn Blows track of the month is an absolute banger.
Liverpool based pop star in the making, Katy Alex, has just released brand new single ‘Glow’. Previous releases have been slated as ‘Bubblegum pop’, whereas her latest cut sees the scouse soloist move into a more electronic lane. Partnering with BBC introducing in her hometown, the call out for a suitable feature has found local artist ‘Kingdom Rapper’ also with a verse on the track.
Katy has been gaining early sonic comparisons already to electronica mainstays Banks & Anna of the North with her infectious, slick take on pop music and you can see why. Pulsating production and sassy, intelligent lyricism combine on ‘Glow’, with the end result a genuine feeling of an artist coming into their own.
On the track, Katy spoke:
Speaking about the song, Katy said: "I remember traveling home from a holiday that was supposed to be a celebration for my birthday and first official solo release feeling totally helpless, I just couldn’t see a way around what I was going through. After some tears were shed I fired up my laptop to work on some music, the quickest and easiest way to distract myself. I remembered in that moment why I write, to express myself, a form of therapy in a way. The best songs are made from raw emotions, and ‘Glow’ is no exception to this. As Disney-esque as it sounds, no one can take away your dreams, and I’ll never stop making music because someone else is trying their hardest to make me. For me, ‘Glow’ perfectly captures the emotions I felt at that time, a powerful message to anyone going through moments of hopelessness to fight back for what you deserve, to turn the pain others inflict on you into a superpower that drives you forwards."
