Introducing #253 - Softee

Let us introduce you to Softee - the stage name of actress and rising DIY pop creator Nina Grollman, who has just released their new single ‘Molly’.

A sexy, swirling ode to a serotonin-pumping first date (inspired by a very real date she had with her now fiancée), Molly is a playful yet powerful statement from an artist already breaking the indie pop mould. The video, directed by Machel Ross (Softee’s fiancée), is a recreation of that electric first date.

Softee took a moment to talk to us about their music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
Robyn, St. Vincent, and Beyonce. They have shaped me the most as an artist in both their sound, lyrics, and the way they have molded their career. I love the way they use pop music as their medium to incite change and evoke powerful emotions.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
Josie and the Pussycats: it's pure camp, insane performances, and a commentary on capitalism and the music industry. I love when something so stupid and campy actually has some subversiveness to it.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Madrid. The food, the people, and the schedule (late dinners, siestas), speak to me. I love Spanish culture, and some of my favorite experiences have been in Spain.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
My sister Ariana. She is so creative and level headed, and has a deep compassion for everyone she comes into contact with. She's also an elementary school music teacher and her stories are the best part of my week. She always has the best insight, I value her advice so much. Also, she's the funniest person I know.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I wrote Molly based off of one of my very first dates with my now fiance Machel. We took Molly and transformed my little apartment into a disco. It's one of my favorite memories and I wrote a song to commemorate that night. Jeremy Capps had sent me this beat that had glitter dust sprinkled into it and that deeply inspired me to write the track. So Molly, my fiance Machel, and producer Jeremy Capps were my biggest inspirations for this track coming to life.

How would you like to inspire people?
I hope for my music to be cathartic in some way. Hopefully out of that catharsis can come some insight into whatever the listener is going through. I hope to continue to put my feelings and experiences into music and hopefully people can relate to it and feel their own feelings through it.
