In Conversation With #230 - Lowertown
Atlanta duo Lowertown have just released their highly anticipated debut album ‘I Love To Lie’ via Dirty Hit.
After meeting in maths class, best friends Olivia Osby and Avsha Weinberg bonded over a mutual love of jazz. Classical pianist Avsha, a first-generation Israeli immigrant, had conservatory aspirations while Olivia spent her formative years writing poetry, feeding melodic snippets to a small but devoted online following.
They took a moment to talk to us about how the album came together.
Hey there Lowertown - how are you? So your album is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Great to finally have this piece of the work out in the world. It’s definitely our proudest work to date. We can’t wait to hear what people have to say.
It is called ‘I Love To Lie’ - what is the meaning behind that?
We don’t want to give away too much information, but it has to do with the range of emotions and people experienced over the year. The dichotomy within one person.
What are the key themes and influences on the album?
Old country/ folk music. 60-80s NYC punk music, aging, isolation, heart break.
If the album could be the soundtrack to any film - which one would it be and why?
Smithereens. big inspiration during the writing process. and Richard Hell + Lowertown is the collab that needs to happen.
Do you have a favorite lyric on the album - if so, which one and why?
“Talking is so harsh and loud
every time i speak gravel falls from my mouth
i now hear your voice
and turn away at the sound
it’s so cutting when it used to be round”
The feelings of losing someone you love over time feel very exemplified in this verse.
Now the album is out there - what next?
