Inspired #358 - Sukie
Manchester indie-pop sensation Sukie has just released her new singe ‘Best Of Luck’.
This track sees her inviting us into her personal space as she opens up about growing up in a complicated family dynamic peppered with mental health issues. Despite its first downcast impression, Sukie’s signature funny-yet-sad lyricism brings to the track into a space growth, resilience and triumph as she reflects on the importance of letting go and moving forward.
She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.
Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
Britney Spears because she’s iconic, Solange because of that time she slapped Jay Z (just kidding it’s because her music is amazing), and FKA twigs because she inspires me to put as much effort into the visuals surrounding my music as the songs themselves.
Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
Can I say school of rock? It’s kind of a joke answer (but also not), I remember Tomika inspiring me to be more confident with singing when I was a little kid haha.
What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
If we’re talking about cities I’ve never been to but like to romanticise in my head, it would be New York, if we’re talking about cities I’ve been to, it would be Manchester. It’s where I grew up and I have so many good and bad memories there, but it’ll always be the place that shaped who I am.
Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
All my friends. They’re so creative and kind and cool. I love them to bits and they constantly inspire me by being so resilient and following their passions.
What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
Everyone who’s grown up with a mentally ill parent. It was such an isolating experience and I wanted to write a song for my younger self and for others who’ve experienced the same thing.
How would you like to inspire people?
I tend to write about super normal experiences, like missing friends or being young and broke or working. I like writing about normal stuff because extraordinary things don’t happen very often. So I guess I’d just like to inspire people to pay attention to the everyday, to remind them that not everything has to be amazing, and that even boring things can be lovely.
