Band Of The Week #297 - Dirty Blonde

This week's Band of the Week is Manchester duo Dirty Blonde - who has just release their new EP 'Looking for Trouble'.

The world of Looking For Trouble is leopard print, red lipstick, and leather jackets. Speaking of the EP, the band says, “When we were writing the EP, we weren’t trying to force the songs into some ‘Dirty Blonde’ box. We just wanted to be authentic and let each track sound the way it felt right”

In their new EP, Dirty Blonde prove that authenticity is their signature sound. Tracks like ‘Adore Me?’ and ‘Polly’ carry a sly charm, serving as the “nicer cousins” to the fierce anthems ‘Checkmate’ and ‘Rush’, while previous single ‘Northern Twang’ stands as the powerful matriarch anchoring it all. Writing the EP was more than just a creative process; it was cathartic, offering a rare moment of reflection. Dirty Blonde reminds us that women in rock aren’t just part of the scene, they’re redefining it.

They took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.

Hey there Dirty Blonde, how are you? So your EP is out now – how does it feel to have it out there?.
We’re good! It feels like a long time coming! We’ve been leaking these songs for ages so it feels good to have them fully out there!

It is called ‘Looking for Trouble’ – what is the meaning behind that?
The whole EP is about our experience of figuring out our twenties. The best stories come from bad decisions, especially if you’re wearing leopard print and leather.

Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories you are willing to share with us?
We recorded in a few different places. Our favourite memory from recording is when we were tracking drums for Rush with Gaz Nuttall. There was a glitch - our drummer's headphones cut out and he accidentally ended up doing this really cool ‘stop’ in the chorus. We didn’t even realise his headphones had stopped working, it just sounded epic. Needless to say, the stop was kept in and it is a favourite to play in our live shows.

What are the key influences behind the EP?
Key influences would have to be Kings of Leon, Pixies and Nothing but Thieves. Some more unconventional ones include Billie Eilish, M.I.A and Chappell Roan.

If the EP could be a soundtrack to any film – which one and why?
Probably any vampire movie. The EP is for people who love to be in love with a sprinkle of chaos and revenge.

Do you have a favourite lyric on the EP? If so, which one and why?
There’s bits of lyrics we love in all the songs and it’s difficult to choose when they’re all so different. Checkmate is the last song to drop in the EP, and we do have to say there is something very cathartic about screaming PSYCHO at the top of your lungs.

Now the EP is out there – what next for you?
