Sprout - 'Settled (Here In My Heart)'
Having recently signed to their new label 7476, Sprout is sounding right at home on their brand new single ‘Settled (Here In My Heart)’.
Newly signed to sevenfoursevensix (Lizzie Reid, Kathleen Frances), the influences are clear, with this initial cut combining the effortless, enchanting songwriting style of new label-mate Matt Maltese with the haunting, classic vocals of the jazz greats. While you won’t find any angular guitars here, you might just be pointed towards a fresh perspective by Sprout’s gorgeous harmonies.
Lyrically it weaves a tale of uncertainty, asking “It’s never the same, so why feel so sure of finding a place settled in my heart?”, a question often asked by the current generation – today’s economic and political situations breed a deep precarious tendency amongst us. Thankfully, we can still find solace in the simple things, and this is music that was made with the anxious among us in mind.
It’s a truly unique sound, one that feels like it could only be born of the North – Sprout hails from Burnley, Lancashire – within it, you can hear the crackle of the vinyl record. Picture a gramophone playing out across a rolling, smoggy landscape, and you’re most of the way there. There’s a definite yearning for simplicity and assurance that dances across the track, almost desperate to pull you away from the incessant shining of the South.
The music and style may not be difficult to pin down, but the artist themselves – self-described as a “genderless blob of emotion” – are a little more aloof. It makes for an all the more intriguing first outing that soars across your speakers. “You can have my body, when you want it again, come over again” they croon effortlessly over soft instrumentation that lets the words rest on your brain and will be sure to bring a wistful look to even the most unmoving of eyes.
They might be feeling a little forlorn, and perhaps rightfully so, but they certainly come across ‘Settled’ on this debut track that gives a delightful taste of what’s to come on their self-titled debut EP, due in June.
