Introducing #230 - Bird Dog

Let us introduce you to London-via-Weymouth band Bird Dog - who have just released their new single ‘Devotion’.

Starting with an unfussy beat, ‘Devotion’ goes on to utilise bass and acoustic guitars to paint a texturally rich sonic scene, drawing from a palette of Americana, roots and a smudge of psych rock. Emotive vocals delivering a heartfelt and introspective narrative give nods to the likes of Cass McCombs or Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. Across the three minutes of ‘Devotion’, Bird Dog fuses the cyclic nature of psychedelic rock with the familiar elements of folk and blues, creating a song which is at once both fresh feeling and nostalgic.

They took a moment to talk to us about their music.

Hey there Bird Dog, how are you?
we’re good, happy to get a new record out

So your new track ‘Devotion’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
The words are about the loneliness of imaginary love, artificial but still cradled like a child

Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
We recorded it in London. some songs take forever to come together, this one came pretty easily

How did you all meet? What made you want to start a band together?
Myself (Emmanuel, vocals) and Alexis (guitars) are brothers and so are Guy (bass) and Piran (drums). We grew up in Weymouth, we were good friends, we all - separately- played music or DJed or were in bands - it was inevitable we would do something together

Where are you based? What are your favorite things to do there?
Alexis moved back to Weymouth a while back. The rest of us are in London. Weymouth is cool, ancient, surrounded by water, lots of pubs, bands, good people. Best thing to do is head to the harbour of an evening, have a few beers and listen to the quiet clinking of the boats in the harbour. Then go into town to see a band. Or catch a bus to Portland Bill and walk round the three lighthouses. And stop at the Cove House on the way back for a pint. Stare at the sea.

What are the key themes and influences in the band when it comes to your music?
Anything with heart and guts and charism.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
“Great songs”
