Inspired #370 - Joshua Idehen

Joshua Idehen has just released his gospel and electronic jazz fueled track ‘I Got You Every Step Of The Way’.

Dance influenced and backed by soulful piano, the body of ‘I Got You Every Step Of The Way’ has a warm and inviting character which couples brilliantly with Idehen’s trademark poetic lyrism and an infectious gospel chorus.

Speaking on the track, Idehen explains; “Leone Ross is one of my best friends, godmother to my daughter, and legit one of the reasons I’m still alive. I told her I’d write her a song. She likes it. Everything else is extra”.

He took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind his music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
The Streets: Because Original Pirate Material was the first time I heard poetry over music and "got it" and it's always been the benchmark for me.
Rufus Wainwright: "Life Is A Game And True Love Is Its Trophy" nuff said.
Daedalus: Where to start?! But really, it has to be Righteous Fists Of Harmony and The Long Lost, two albums that showed me a whole new realm of possibility.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
Fargo: I can't really call a film perfect, but here's a movie where the acting is masterclass, the script is fantastic, the quirkiness is utilised to great effect... this is a perfect film. I would love to make something so uniquely Nigerian yet so perfect that a person in some outback town in America relates to it  on a deeper level.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Lisbon. Nah, sorry London, every time I've been to Lisbon, I've come back with a song. If you been to Lisbon you'd understand.
Okay, yes; I've written a lot of songs in and about London BUT IT'S NOT THE SAME THING.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
I'm holding on to Keanu Reeves as the last un-cancellable man left. Someone who managed to pick the right roles and stay relatively humble and approachable (and young looking) through several decades has got my vote.

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
Friendship, Love, Regret, Confidence.

How would you like to inspire people?
Honestly, I'm not looking to inspire, tbh, I'd settle for reaching out and connecting
