In Conversation With #199 - Spacey Jane

Spacey Jane have just released their new album ‘Here Comes Everybody’.

They move through themes that consider negative behaviours, letting destiny run its course, the passion and fear of relationships, and how hard it can be to wrestle yourself through tough times. Wherever they settle song to song, Spacey Jane offer something genuine and sincere.

They took a moment to talk to us about how the album came together.

Hey Spacey Jane - so your album is finally here. How does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Very exciting but also very scary!  We poured a lot into this record and we hope people love it as much as we do.

It is called ‘Sitting Up’ - what is the meaning behind that?
It’s actually called ‘Here Comes Everybody’!  It was the working title for Wico’s incredible ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’ which I think they got from a novel from the early 1900’s.  I’ve always loved the phrase.  In the context of this record I like the way the name can take on contrasting meanings depending on whether you feel like you’re a part of the crowd or overcome by it.

Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
We recorded it between Perth and Brisbane over here in Australia.  Ashton and I flew to Brisbane to finish the record and ended up getting stuck there for a month because covid boarder closures!  I think that was a really important time for us both because we really lived inside of the record and the creative process.  I think it gave us a perspective we wouldn’t have had otherwise.

What are the key themes and influences on the album?
Mostly it’s about not having to fight the feeling of feeling like shit.  Life can really suck and that’s ok.

Do you have a favorite lyric on the album? If so, which one and why?

I really the like “What will I do tomorrow?” from “It’s Been a Long Day”.  It’s a question and a feeling I have asked felt so many times.  Feeling aimless and restless, like you have no purpose and I think that line says it simply.

If the album could be a soundtrack to any film - which one and why?
The next Fast and Furious.

Now the album is out there - what next for you?
Writing the next one of course!  Lots of touring to come over the next months and we might even get a month off if we’re lucky.
