Introducing #243 - Just Wondering

Let us introduce you to Dublin based electronic-pop trio Just Wondering - who have just revealed their new single ‘Just My Luck’ via Lower Third.

Merging elements of pastel-coloured-pop, vitalic indie and buzzing electronics ‘Just My Luck’ follows ‘idk, maybe’ in building on the three-piece’s reputation for invigorating earworms rooted in freedom of expression, experimentation, and wholehearted camaraderie.

They took a moment to talk to us about their music.

So your track ‘Just My Luck’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
It is indeed. It's sort of about a selfish person who won't take responsibility for their actions. The idea of saying "so much for my friends, it's all their fault," was just really funny and striking to us, obviously none of us think that's a reasonable stance to take on things and that's sort of the point of the whole thing - playing the asshole. It may or may not be based off real experiences lol. But yeah all of our songs tend to hop from topic to topic because we all just say what we feel like saying at the time, and this one is just a lot of different versions of the useless unhelpful ways people act and blame the consequences on others - or their luck - hence the title. Gimme all your cash also, cheers.

Where are you from and what are your favourite things to do there?
We're from Dublin, Ireland and boooorringgglyyy our favourite thing to do here is make tunes... In truth we all basically just work during the week and make tunes + hang out with our mates at the weekend and have been doing that every week for the past 2 years or so. It's the best buzz going. Dublin is crazy expensive so ya gotta stick to the simpler things here, especially if you want to be able to sit around on the jazz cigarettes making beats as much as possible. Haven't had a decent day of activities in Dublin since we were about 11 years old.

What are the key influences when it comes to your music?
Key influence number one is the jazz cigarettes for sure. Nah like beyond that, so much stuff that is way cooler than our music so not worthy of comparison but always worthy of respect and acknowledgement. The otherworldy soundscapes of Jon Hopkins, the 10/10 buzztown central vibes off Four Tet, honestly any Lofi House, every single bar on Headie One and Fred Again's album GANG, the conviction, humour, and innovation in almost everything Kanye West does, at the moment we're all flat out on getforward by Golden Vessel and Do It (Anyway) by Fiyahdred. Everything that inspires us is either something that pushes boundaries sonically and creates a huge buzz, huge effortlessly buzzy Afrobeat tracks, or hip hop tracks which are just characteristically full of personality, humour and genuine, honest, unfiltered expressions of stuff people actually feel and say.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Being 100% honest I think we stopped trying to describe how music sounds, it's like trying to explain colours. Our tunes are born out of having such a good time in a back garden, with our mates coming in and out as we make tunes. We make them for our mates, and your mates, to spin at parties and sing along. We try to paint a colourful and bright picture. We talk 10/10 nonsense at times because it's funny and we think music is too serious sometimes. The tracks are made to be fun, we'll leave the sad songs to other people. So yeah I dunno that's what we try to do and I think the music reflects that!

Now the track is out there, what next for you?
Next is convincing our management to put out the new tune we just made that we all love so much and think is the best thing we've made so far! Beyond that is trying to make a song betterr than that one. We've got some festivals coming up which should be good craic, some headline shows. Standard buzz nothing out of the ordinary... but as I've said before the one difference is that we're gonna have eeeexxxxxtttraaaa craic doing it and that's a promise love uuuuu thanks for having us
