PVA - 'Bad Dad'
PVA indulge further into their electronic core with spectral new single “Bad Dad” from their upcoming debut album.
The South London trio release their second single off the highly anticipated “BLUSH”, due for release on October 14th via Ninja Tune. This will be their first full-length album, written throughout the pandemic whilst live gigs were nothing but a distant hope, which was a tough challenge for a group which is known for their prowess on stage.
“Bad Dad” almost feels like a real live experience with its dreamy synth sound design, including a rooted pulverizing mono bass part which tears brilliantly through the mix from start to finish and spacious reverb packed textures which glosses over the chorus. It is clear to see how these sounds can easily translate into a powerful live performance in the hands of Ella Harris (vocals, keys) and Josh Baxter (vocals, guitar, keys) alongside percussion virtuoso Louis Satchell, who have all gained such high prestige in such a brief timespan.
Harris delves into the subject of toxic masculinity and its effect on surrounding subjects, whilst delivering a vocal performance which is reminiscent of the increasingly admired spoken word excellence seen by the likes of Jenny Hval and Florence Shaw of Dry Cleaning. The mix between electronic drums and live drum recordings works very well with the high-end sizzles offered Satchell’s drumming.
This shows a group which are dedicated to mastering their craft, taking whatever time is necessary to create a piece of work which they can be proud of, all whilst letting it take a life of its own and lead them to unknown domains they have not explored before.
“BLUSH” is sure to turn some attention to the rumbling energy that PVA can translate so swiftly into their sound, loaded with the electronic expertise that has brough them so far in the five years since their formation.
