Introducing #238 - The Underclass
Harbouring a sound that feels both classic and contemporary, Stoke five-piece The Underclass channel a long history of indie royalty, creating something that feels cathartic, optimistic, and perhaps most importantly, vital. We caught up with the band to find out a little more about
Hey guys - how are you? So you've recently released your new single - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Hey man, we’re great in fact we’re buzzing to finally have Hometown out! We worked extremely hard on this tune and the reception it’s had so far has been mind blowing! Really humbling for us boys to see.
It is called ‘Hometown’ - Can you tell us what it's about?
Hometown is about our roots, where we’re from, who we are as people and how we should never forget where we came from. A lot of people say the lyrics really show who we are as a band which I’m really glad to hear. We are 5 honest lads who are proud of where we’re from and wanna go as far as possible!
You are based in Stoke - what are your favourite things to do there? Where do you go for adventures? Compared to big cities like Manchester, London, Liverpool etc Stoke is nowhere near the size of them or as rich to be honest so there isn’t a whole lot to do at home. However there are some mint pubs round the area that we enjoy sinking a few pints in hahah.
What are the key influences in your music?
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before? - I’d describe our sound as melodically punky in a way. We take massive inspiration from post punk bands and indie music but all 5 of us have very different music tastes so there’s elements of everything in our tunes. From electronica influences to 80s pop there’s all of it! I’d say that’s what makes our sound it’s own.
