Introducing #247 - Creature Cult

Let us introduce you to Colchester duo Creature Cult - who blend together punk rock and electronic pop but with an added anarchic kick.

Being outcasts most of their lives, they stand with the kids society pushes out -  the LGBTQ+ community, the misfits, the kids with coloured hair and smudged makeup who have to shout louder to be heard.

With songs about homophobia, sexism, football hooliganism, and mental health problems, they are unafraid to speak up and fight against out-dated social conventions and injustices whilst wrapping it up in raw guitars, and an electronic/trap sound, similar to the likes of Lil Peep, and Ghostmane. Embracing alt-culture, they’re also inspired by bands like Nirvana and Green Day.

They took a moment to talk to us about their music and their debut track ughly.

Hey Creature Cult how are you? So your debut track ‘ughly’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
Hey we’re doing good thank you! Sure, it’s about people making you feel like you can’t be who you are because of the way you look or dress, basically for not being considered ‘normal’, whatever that means. People make homophobic comments at us all the time just because we wear makeup and have different hair and it’s super outdated and wrong, let people be who they want to be and celebrate their individuality. That’s why we spelt it as ugh-ly because it’s so boring having to hear these comments and it’s such an ugly trait to tear people down all the time.

Where are you from and what are your favourite things to do there?
We are from Colchester, Essex, which is crazy old, it’s apparently the oldest town in England. We love a bit of charity shopping and also there’s an amazing vegan cafe that does the loveliest cakes. We’re big fans of the cherry bakewell and orange brownie.

What are the key influences when it comes to your music?
They are always changing and go all over the place but right now we are listening to a lot of trap metal and old school punk like Sex Pistols. We geek out when it comes to music theory so anything that uses strange chords or scales always works a treat. Fashion is important to us too, especially 70s Vivienne Westwood, we love the attitude of it and what it stands for. We also love films and a wicked soundtrack, we’ve been obsessed with The Nightmare Machine ever since hearing it used in The VVitch. We take little bits and pieces from everything and blend it all up until it feels brand new.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Alternative with electronic edge gets you a Creature Cult sound. We call it Culternative.

Now the track is out there, what’s next for you?
Ughly is our first step into this big dark world, we have plenty more to come. Shows will be a big thing for us, we are so excited to bring something new to the stage.
