Band Of The Week #219 - Low Girl
Kicking off 2023 with our first Band of the Year with Low Girl - who have just released their anticipated new EP ‘Uh-Oh’ - which is five tracks of alternative indie with a sprinkle of dream pop to give it that extra kick.
The new EP takes the band to a new level, cementing the exciting groundwork they have put in place over the last 18 months and is released in full with new single ‘Bored’. It continues the themes found across their first two EPs–feelings of loneliness, self-worth, mental health and the constant trials and struggles of finding one’s identity growing up. Citing artists ranging from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard to King Princess, Phoebe Bridgers as inspiration, the breadth of Low Girls’ influences are clear to hear but never detracts from their own unique identity and innate songwriting ability.
They took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.
Hey there Low Girl- how are you? So your EP is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Hey hey! I think we're all doing okay! It's nice to finally see something we put so much thought and time into finally being heard.
It is called ‘Uh-Oh’ - what is the meaning behind that?
There's a lot of tension and desperate optimism in the lyrics throughout the EP, but a looming feeling that things are about to go wrong. I think 'Uh-Oh' kinda leans into my own tendency to play something off as a joke even if its hurting me.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
It was largely recorded at Damage Audio in Bedford with a cool guy named Faz. Before going to the studio we actually all went on a weekend away in the middle of nowhere as a band. While we were there we just spent all our time trying to fully realise each track, as well as watching jumanji and apprehensively petting a horse in a nearby field.
What are the key themes and influences on the EP?
In general the theme of this EP is a sense of foreboding and things falling apart. I'd say we were very much influenced by LCD Soundsystem, The Strokes, Alex Turner and Perfume Genius amongst other things!
If the EP could be the soundtrack to any film - which one would it be and why?
It would definitely have to be some kinda coming of age film, but I'm sat with Toby and he's saying Scott Pilgrim very optimistically.
Do you have a favorite lyric on the EP - if so, which one and why?
I'm torn because on the one hand the obvious choice seems to be "to be alone and separate, there's a beauty in the fact" - but "I still look for your name" had a really important and expressive meaning to me even though it sounds so average.
Now the EP is out there - what next?
We are about to head out on a co-headline tour with Sarpa Salpa this February for Independent Venue Week! Beyond that, we've been burrowed away at home working on what we want to do next. I think we all really want to make an album - that's the dream.
