Mera Bhai - 'Evil Butter' Ft Stealing Sheep
Mera Bhai’s new single ‘Evil Butter’ teases his unreleased EP ‘Relax Into Yourself’ which speaks about how bittersweet self-care can feel in the modern day world.
The ‘Evil Butter’ new single by Mera Bhai featuring Stealing Sheep is a dancefloor-tuned packed track filled with classic Brazilian funk samples, velvety bass, and intoxicating vocals, that Mera Bhai says that it feels ‘like you’re rushing/coming up’. This single is about how bittersweet self-care can feel in our lives fast paced world.
This musical diverse single was Mera Bhai’s opportunity to delve into juxtapositions through the sound and lyrics based on writings from self-help books from the 90s and 00s. Growing up he spent a lot of time reading, which included Hindu and Buddhist philosophy, and many of these writers bridged into the ‘New Ae/Self Help’ era. Mera continues that Hindu and Buddhist philosophy was appropriated and then became commercialised. He then compares how yoga was a spiritual practice and now it is so commercialised there is so many new types of “yoga” and that is very much ‘Evil Butter’.
He uses a play on words to pull a focus onto how we feel whether we feel good and bad. There is a juxtaposition, butter is delicious, how can it be evil? And self-care is so good, how can it feel so wrong? Tacking time for yourself, healing and caring can be a confusing process because of all the life pressures and expectations from social media and the influences. This is shown through the sweet and sultry, yet ominous sounding vocals sang by the Liverpool trio Stealing Sheep. We get hypnotised by this, and we start to align ourselves with what social media pushes to us, especially when none of this feels right.
Mera Bhai says that the point is that none of it sits right with the listener, which was intentional for it to feel this way. He wanted it to mirror how we get fed the messages of empowerment by the media when they try to convince us what is good for us. This fits perfectly with Stealing Sheep as they have strong anti-establishment vibe, and their tracks seem to have coded messages and commentary on social media.
Before this Mera Bhai had a two-year break from releasing music after the release of his 2020 debut EP ‘Futureproofing’. He calls this break an ‘enforced period’ of musical development. His music is ever evolving music takes influence from the 80s/90s house, Detroit techno and Jungle breaks, and he often borrows from Classic Bollywood Soundtracks. He has also been awarded PRSF Open Fund for upcoming releases which he deserves.
Get ready to detach from social media by the 7th of April when the EP ‘Relax into Yourself’ is released.
