Artist Of The Week #228 - Frankie Rose

This week’s Artist of the Week is Frankie Rose - who has just released her new album ‘Love As Projection’ via Night School Records.

After spending nearly two decades establishing herself across New York and Los Angeles independent music circles, Rose re-emerges after six years with a fresh form, aesthetic, and ethos. Celebrated over the years for her expansive approach to songwriting, lush atmospherics, and transcendent vocal melodies and harmonies, Love As Projection is a reintroduction of her established style through the lens of contemporary electronic pop. Recorded with producer Brandt Gassman and mixed with long-term collaborator Jorge Elbrecht this is the album Frankie Rose has been building up to her entire career.

She took a moment to talk to us about how the album came together.

Hey there Frankie - how are you? So your album is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Well, it had been delayed 2 years because of pressing plant backup. I was really skeptical that it was ever going ton happen. But here it is. I am mostly relieved!

It is called ‘Love As Projection’ - what is the meaning behind that?
I don't think I have an easy explanation for it!  I think people in my country ( the united states) county are all being sold this idea about loving your neighbor and unity While simultaneously being divided by culture war stuff. and most of that is coming
From a certain rulemaking class of people. And while most of us are closer to being homeless than being a billionaire or even a millionaire, there is this unbearable division being sown. This idea  that there is a bad side and a good side like a Star Wars movie. It’s like a horrible distraction from who is actually keeping us all in abject poverty. meanwhile, the same people are fine with like strike breaking and increasing an insane military budget all when people can’t afford rent or eggs or get medical care. How are we supposed to get along? when you are going bankrupt from having cancer or something? I guess that’s what the title means.

Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
Sort of my usual process. I record it all poorly in my home studio, and then I take it to a much nicer home studio usually with an engineer/ producer to help finish ot off. A fellow named Brandt Gassman was kind enough to volunteer his home studio space.

What are the key themes and influences on the album?
I wanted to make a more synth-driven record. there are almost no guitars.

If the album could be the soundtrack to any film - which one would it be and why?
I think it would be some kind of  80's John Hughes film. like "pretty and pink" or something. Thats the vibe.

Do you have a favorite lyric on the album - if so, which one and why?
I have a million. But cocteau twins " heaven or Las vegas" will always be high on the list.

Now the album is out there - what next?
Tour! Then make another album!!!!!
