Inspired #413 - Rosie Darling

Indie-pop artist Rosie Darling has just released her delicate new single ‘Justify’.

Layering vocals with beautifully light guitars - the achingly dreamy new ballad dives into the all-too-common relationship where one person rationalizes poor treatment.

The new song is the latest glimpse at Rosie Darling’s highly-anticipated debut LP (via Nettwerk) slated for later this year, and comes on the heels of two recently released tracks, “Nail In The Coffin” ft. Boy In Space and “Lost On You”.

Rosie took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
Gracie Abrams, Phoebe Bridges and Taylor Swift. They have been such an inspiration of what it means to write poetic and emotional songs that can speak to a ton of different people from different backgrounds. They’re so real and raw, yet so beautiful and inspiring.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
I think anywhere in Europe is inspiring! I had the opportunity to travel to a few different cities last year and it was one of the best experiences! I love traveling and learning about different cultures. Living in LA can be quite a bubble sometimes, so exploring new places and experiencing other people is really important to me. From food to fashion to sight seeing, I love all of it. There are tons of places I have yet to visit so I hope I can keep exploring :)

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
Right now probably Taylor Swift! I grew up learning guitar because of her and I have to say she has carried me through adulthood with her music and has never failed to impress me. She has so much grace in what she does and she is truly a pro. I hope to make it to one of her shoes on this tour so badly! Something I respect so much about her is that she has been able to stay herself throughout her career. It's so cool to see someone still excelling and inspiring people years later!

What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I like to draw inspiration from certain emotions that I experience or have experienced in my life; however, I also understand that creative writing is a tool that you can play with to paint a larger picture for someone listening even if they don’t know my story. I love writing and using super specific lyrics because it allows the listener to relate to the experience in a way that feels really personal while also protecting my own experience. I truly love how music can relate to anyone and feel that no matter what I am singing about whether it is personal or not, it can FEEL personal to a listener. I know for me sometimes I hear songs and I don’t even quite know the story behind it but there is just a special feeling in the production or melodies that capture me and keep me listening. I have always been somewhat comfortable sharing my emotions in writing because I think part of being an artist and sharing your art is allowing yourself to be vulnerable even if it is scary! I do like to maintain a sense of privacy though when speaking about songs because it really is important to me that the songs relate to my listeners and fans more than it is that they know every single detail about my personal life. I think finding that balance is key because I really want my listeners to relate and find their own stories in my songs. :)

How would you like to inspire people?
Through music! If I can make one person feel more seen in their experience that brings me joy. I love hearing from people and fans when they relate to my songs. Writing has really helped me process and so knowing it connects with other people in their own ways is really special.
