Crystal Fighters - 'Carolina'

‘Carolina’, the new single from Crystal Fighters, is a folksy yet modern track that understands the importance of living a life you enjoy rather than living for your work.

The British-Basque electronic music band Crystal Fighters have come out with another single titled ‘Carolina’ for their yet unrevealed 5th and upcoming album. Just last month they released ‘Manifest’, which was a somewhat different piece of music in comparison to this recent one.

The band, known for its part old and part new, part pop and part traditional themes in music, show off their fusion skills with both these tracks in very different ways. ‘Manifest’ sounds more pop, more laid back yet a track you can dance to, but still somehow feels like a modern version of an old piece of music.

On the other hand, ‘Carolina’ is more traditional, but has a lot of modern ideologies in its lyricism and construction. While talking about the track, Sebastian Pringle of the band said: “A real-life love story set in Colombia, Carolina is a homage to a woman Seb fell for, someone who escaped the rat race, and made her way to the coast.” The song opens its intro by announcing her name with a Basque-folksy background score, and then immediately jumps into a strong chorus, plunging us into this world of music which is a mixture of folk and electronic, for which the Crystal Fighters are well known.

Pringle goes on to explain the song further and says that she was now living a life which did not have a lot of money, but a lot more happiness. The band wanted to tell her story of how she claimed her freedom by letting go of what society expects of us, and rather pursue her own dreams; a life she would enjoy instead of living for her work. The chorus recognizes her choice of life, and the two verses achieve exactly what Pringle set out to achieve with this track.

With a post-chorus which is something you can chant while dancing in huge crowds, the song goes into an outro which celebrates this joyful change in her life, and in a way nudges the listeners to live their lives in a similar way.

‘Carolina’, along with the previously released ‘Manifest’, also leave the audiences wondering, what exactly is the next album from the Crystal Fighters going to be, what other musical and lyrical themes it will include, and how they all tie up together as an album.
