Introducing #276 - Recruitment

Let us introduce you to North London’s new stars - Recruitment - who have just release their debut single ‘Overdrawn’ via Big Richard Records.

The track is a sneering takedown of succumbing to image standards and the burden of having ambitions in life. Friends since childhood, Recruitment formed little over a year ago and instantly began honing their craft in a live setting, allowing themselves to develop their songs in the presence of an audience. They quickly caught the attention of Big Richard Records (home to Man/Woman/Chainsaw, Brie, Kipper Gillespie), who have released the track via the label.

While describing themselves as “aesthetically average, but song-focused”, the band might exist within the well-trodden realm of artful post-punk, but insist that they’re not here to ‘flog a dead horse’, and instead offer their own fervent take on the genre with added grit and grime.

They took a moment to talk to us about their music.

Hey there Recruitment, how are you? So your debut track ‘Overdrawn’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
Hello, we are terrific, thank you for asking. The song is about the beauty of ambition, overreaching, and self doubt. Looks like I've ripped off Frankenstein come to think of it.

Where are you from and what are your favorite things to do there?
We are from the capital. London. Hatched and raised. We love wet led pubs and spotting old telephone numbers on shop fronts.
Shirley, our drummer, follows the Romford raiders. Tom can be mostly found on eBay.

What are the key influences when it comes to your music?
We are all primarily fans of songs. I had a mind altering experience watching Parquet Courts in Barcelona. Our drummer listens pretty much exclusively to Ice Spice.
At the moment our music has a post punk sound, but we probably won't be doing that forever.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Tom, our bass player, described it as cluster punk.  The aggressive side to our music comes out in bursts, we don't always choose to sustain it.
There are elements of country, blues and jazz that creep through to settle things down.

Now the track is out there, what next for you?
More, more, more. We are working on a few new ones at the moment, looking to play more shows, headline more shows and should be releasing more with Big Richard later this year.
