Live Review: Poolside - Scala, London - 19/06/2024

On a suitably balmy summer evening, Scala in Kings Cross was transformed into a vibrant haven of shimmering synths and sun-soaked melodies as Los Angeles “daytime disco” pioneers Poolside took the stage for a rare London show. The intimate venue buzzed with anticipation, and Poolside delivered a performance that was nothing short of spectacular.

The evening commenced with a buoyant DJ set from Jacana People. Burgeoning in the scene with their eclectic mixes and atmospheric beats, they curated the perfect sonic landscape to prepare the crowd for the main act. The duo seamlessly blended ethereal tracks with pulsating rhythms, setting an upbeat and intoxicating tone that perfectly prefaced Poolside's signature sound.

As the main-act Poolside eventually took the stage, the room was filled with a palpable sense of excitement. They opened with "Kiss You Forever”, from their hit debut album Pacific Standard Time, immediately enveloping the audience in their dreamy, laid-back aura. This was swiftly followed by their newest single, "Ride with You," a fresh track that hinted at new creative directions and delighted fans with its catchy, sun-drenched vibes.

The set continued with another fan-favourite: a Miami Horror rework of "Leila," which showcased Poolside's inimitable ability to blend their style with other influences seamlessly. "Feel Alright" came next, prefaced by lead singer Jeffrey Paradise's heartfelt words: "We don't get to come here often, so we're always glad when we do. You guys are a pretty crowd!" The audience responded with cheers, deepening the connection between the band and their fans.

The journey through Poolside's discography included "Sea of Dreams," "Around the Sun," and the Portuguese-language, nostalgic "Esperar Pra Var," each song adding to the tapestry of the night. "Can't Stop Your Loving" brought a groove that had the crowd swaying, while their much-loved Neil Young cover, "Harvest Moon," was a soulful highlight that drew a warm, collective glee from the audience.

"Everything Goes" wrapped up the main set, leaving the crowd yearning for more as the band exited the stage. Any anticipation quickly turned into elation as Poolside returned for an encore.

The encore began with "Each Night," a track that resonated deeply with the night's dreamy theme. This was followed by "Back to Life," a song written in collaboration with Panama, which infused the venue with an infectious energy. The final song, "Feel Your Weight," their hugely popular rework of the Rhye track, was the perfect closer, its rhythmic beats and lush instrumentation leaving the audience in a state of bliss.

Poolside's set at Scala was a masterful blend of old favourites and fresh sounds, delivered with a warmth and authenticity that made the night truly spectacular. From Jeffrey Paradise's engaging stage presence to the musical dexterity and the seamless flow of the setlist, every element contributed to a solid night beneath the beating Camden sun.
